Position Title: Critical Care Specialist

Position Classification: Regular, Full-Time

Reports to: Chief Medical Officer, Partners In Health-Lesotho

Location: Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital, Maseru, Lesotho

Position Overview 

Partners In Health-Lesotho (PIH-L) seeks an experienced critical care physician leader to work in close collaboration with PIH-L and Ministry of Health (MoH) colleagues to support the provision of high-quality critical care services at Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital. The Critical Care Specialist will be accountable, in partnership with the Critical Care Nurse Specialist, for ensuring delivery of high quality care for critically ill patients at Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital, with a focus on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The Critical Care Specialist will provide direct clinical care to critically ill patients admitted to the Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital ICU and provide supervision and support to clinicians caring for critically ill patients throughout the hospital. The Critical Care Specialist will serve as a role model and mentor to Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital staff as part of the goal of implementing policies and procedures to establish a precedent for the highest possible standards of critical care. The Specialist will lead and collaborate on various training and quality improvement projects related to critical care at Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital  and provide expert technical support to the Lesotho MoH in the areas of critical care and medical oxygen.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Clinical service

  • Provide direct clinical care for patients admitted to the Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital ICU
  • Provide supervision for other physicians working in the Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital ICU
  • Provide consultative and on-call support to clinical staff at Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital caring for critically ill patients
  • Model interdisciplinary care, working closely with nurses and other cadres to establish care plans for critically ill patients

Leadership and administrative

  • Promote a positive learning environment by coordinating regular clinical conferences (e.g., journal clubs, morbidity and mortality reviews, etc.)
  • Promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement by working with Botsabelo MDR-TB Hospital staff and PIH-L leadership to develop and support ongoing quality improvement initiatives
  • Accompany Botsabelo ICU clinical staff to implement evidence-based practice for complex patients requiring ICU level care through direct mentorship and training 
  • Assist with development, updating, and implementation of policies, protocols, and other key documents related to critical care at Botsabelo MDR-TB hospital
  • Serve as a liaison between PIH-L and Lesotho MoH on matters related to critical care and medical oxygen, under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer
  • Provide additional accompaniment to Lesotho MoH in support of national critical care objectives on an as needed basis

Qualifications

  • Medicine degree from fully accredited institution in country of origin
  • Postgraduate training in pulmonary medicine, critical care, or anaesthesia preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in airway management and treatment of acute respiratory failure (including mechanical ventilation)
  • Experience with basic bronchoscopic techniques (e.g., airway examination, airway clearance, and broncho-alveolar lavage) preferred
  • Experience in health systems strengthening in rural and/or resource-limited settings
  • Demonstrated ability for teaching and mentorship, including experience organizing and leading clinical trainings
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across cultures with respect and humility
  • Personal and professional commitment to social justice
