Purpose of the Position
The Accountant will be responsible for ensuring daily financial accountability and providing accurate periodic financial reports for BDS projects. This role is crucial to ensuring compliance with BDS’s financial policies, procedures, and donor requirements. The Accountant will support key staff, including the Director, Shelter Coordinator, Child Care Coordinator, and others in making informed financial decisions related to resource allocation.
Key Responsibilities
• Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly management accounts
• Accounting Entries: Prepare assets, liabilities, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
• Reconciliation: Reconcile financial discrepancies, bank accounts, and petty cash accounts monthly in QuickBooks.
• Oversight and Support: Oversee bookkeeper duties and provide project team support by explaining budget variances.
• Budget Planning: Contribute to project planning and budgeting and ensure adequate cash flow.
• Compliance and Controls: Ensure compliance with donor regulations and financial controls; support audits as required.
• Documentation and Reconciliation: Promptly process documents for payments and ensure reconciliation of LDR/timesheet, payroll, and travel advances.
• Analysis and Reporting: Provide monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reports for decision-making and tax purposes.
• Transparency and Risk Management: Promote transparency and integrity, adhering to good stewardship practices.
Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent; a professional accounting certification is an added advantage.
• Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in an accounting/finance role, preferably within an NGO setting. Experience working with donor-funded organizations is highly advantageous.
• Skills:
• Strong proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel
• Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team and independently
• Detail-oriented, organized, and able to meet deadlines
• Ability to perform well under pressure and manage multiple tasks
Other Competencies
• Strong analytical and report-writing skills
• Effective communication (oral and written) with presentation skills
• Competency in judgment, discretion, and independent task completion
• Experience in managing large, internationally funded grant projects is a plus
